Function:

• Contains most of the genes that control the cell
• Genes are contained in regions of the molecule DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid)
• DNA is packaged with some 'scaffolding' proteins into chromatin
• Bundles of chromatin form the chromosomes

Structure:

• Surrounded by a double membrane
• Movement to and from the nucleus occurs through pores in the nuclear membrane
