Function:

• Controlled digestion of cell components

Structure:

• Surrounded by a single membrane
• Filled with digestive (hydrolytic) enzymes
• The boundary membrane keeps the hydrolytic enzymes away from the rest of the cytoplasm and so controls what enters the lysozome, and therefore what will be digested
