Introduction to Using SAS at Penn State

The SAS System is an integrated suite of software for enterprise-wide information delivery. The functionality of the system is built around the four data-driven tasks common to virtually any application -- data access, data management, data analysis and data presentation. Applications of the SAS System include executive information systems; data entry, retrieval, and management; report writing and graphics; statistical and mathematical analysis; business planning, forecasting, and decision support; operations research and project management; statistical quality improvement; computer performance evaluation; and applications development. The SAS System is modularly designed to give organizations the flexibility to license only the functionality they need. As their needs grow and change, additional components can be added on in a completely integrated manner across the wide range of computing environments supported by the software.

Indeed, there are so many components available within the SAS System, that most tasks involving data of almost any type can be handled using SAS. Not only does SAS offer the suite of "traditional" statistical analysis components, but one may also find a spreadsheet application, interactive data display applications, a graphical Market Research Application, a graphical user interface with statistical assistance for engineers and research scientists called SAS/LAB, a matrix calculation and manipulation component, and tools for interacting with data via a web interface (SAS/INTRNET)... to name a few.
